Appendix G LIGHTNING SAFETY 40-30 RULE

Applies to All Competitions

Play will be suspended in Dangerous or Unreasonable Conditions. The following will apply in addition to Law 2.8 (2017 Code 4th ed):

G1 [40/30 Rule] If thunder follows a lightning flash by 40 seconds or less, play must cease immediately.

 

G2 Players and umpires must leave the field immediately and must not return until 30 minutes after the initial lightning flash.

 

G3 If during the suspension of play thunder follows a lightning flash by 40 seconds or less, the 30 minute suspension period is to recommence.

LIGHTNING STRIKE OUTDOORS CAN BE FATAL.

SHELTER in an enclosed building or vehicle (avoiding metal).

DON’T SHELTER anywhere open, under trees or near metal.

DO NOT LEAVE SAFE SHELTER TO PUT OUT PITCH COVERS

If players and umpires are off the field, under shelter to be safe from lightning strike, then groundskeeper and helpers should be off the field under shelter too.

If someone is struck by lightning call 000 immediately and begin CPR, using a defibrillator if possible.

If 000 is not working, dial 112 from a mobile phone.

Monitor weather conditions through The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) app or website.
